 - Recording in Bratislava

I went to Bratislava with John Scott in January 2003 for two reasons: 1) to be of any assistance I could during the recording sessions for Belem and 2) to see for myself what it is like recording with the Slovak Radio Orchestra in Bratislava. You see, I was planning a project of my own, and needed to find a musically satisfactory but financially possible location in which to do it. British musicians are the finest in the world! You have heard it said time and time again, and it is true. Unfortunately, they are also just about the most expensive. So while we all try to record in London whenever possible, there are times when budgets do not allow it. When that is the case, we have to go elsewhere. Munich and Dublin have recently been favoured by British composers, as well as Sophia, Warsaw, Prague, and Moscow. Now there is Bratislava the capital of Slovakia, and about an hours drive from Vienna. Orchestral recording usually takes place in the concert hall of the Slovak Radio station. It is an impressive room, with a large platform complete with a wall of organ pipes behind. Music sounds good in the room; bright, alive and detailed, but with an intrinsic warmth too. The musicians of the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra are proficient sight-readers, and there are first-rate players in all departments. They may not be so blisteringly fast when sight-reading, but theyre not far behind London musicians. The experience with John was sufficient to convince me that I could record my Piano Concerto, Symphony no 1, and Storm there, and I returned in December 2003 to do just that. The sessions were sometimes quite difficult, particularly with the Symphony, but we got it all done, and the album will be released by Albany Records in the autumn of 2004. The pianist in the concerto, Olga Dudnik, is astonishingly good completely musical and a truly great person to work with. I am delighted with her performance. Incidentally, I have now known John for forty years. He was instrumental in getting me started as a composer all those years ago, and I will always be grateful for his encouragement early on and his friendship ever since. And, of course, he continues to write great music!
