One of John Scotts true loves has always been writing music for the dark realms of horror and fantasy. The composers penchant for the macabre began with his first movie score for "A Study in Terror". But whether his scores were unleashing a cavemans wrath, encountering a fearsome alien, of catapulting a battleship through time, John Scotts music has always retained its symphonic beauty in the face of its horrific subjects. His delicate strings conjure a subtle sinister atmosphere. The brass sections trombones, flutes and trumpets howl with a monsters wrath. A full orchestra soars to celebrate evil in all its dark splendor. Its music that befits the golden age of Universal and Hammer horror, and perhaps none of John Scotts music captures the gloriously dark spirit like his score for Witchcraft. In this score the music conjures up pictures of haunted graveyards, witches Sabbaths, executions and witch burnings. There is also a soaring, evocative romantic theme and a pastoral theme confirming the beauty of the English countryside. |

The second Jules Verne score to be composed by John Scott is full of wonderful melodies. The mysterious theme surrounding Captain Nemo is juxtaposed with the theme of the Mighty Nautilus, that incredible submarine invented in the fertile imagination of Jules Verne. There is an abundance of underwater music of which John Scott is a master composer. This is high adventure music at its best. | ||

The USS Nimitz, the most powerful aircraft carrier in the US navy, is caught up in an electrical storm of such incredible magnitude that it creates a time warp. This is happening all the time within the Bermuda triangle, although the governments of the world have conspired to keep it secret. The carrier is catapulted back to a time when the Japanese fleet was heading towards Pearl Harbor in order to precipitate the Second World War. Good old American know- how (or in this case, guess-how) comes to the rescue and manages to resolve an incredibly tricky situation. The score abounds in memorable themes. "The Final Countdowns" sparkling, thrusting main theme leads us through to the "Storm Theme" as it relentlessly hunts down the ill-fated aircraft carrier. A beautifully toughing love theme leads to the "Tideman Theme" full of questioning mystery. Was Mr. Tideman serving aboard the USS Nimitz, and did he survive the time warp in order to design the USS Nimitz nearly half a century later? All these questions and far more will be answered next time you see the film. A Powerful Science-Fiction Movie Score. Starring : Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, Katherine Ross, James Farantino |
